You wouldn't like 2nd ed so much if you had ever DM'd and had to roll initiative for every monster every turn. 3.5 is much better imo; feats make melee class characters more interesting too.

i always say my opinion as a player ofc.3.5 editon has many good things, i can't say. But i believe that if the books,stories,nouvelles and background of the 2nd mix with the rules of 3.5 edition, would be the best. Imo always, the background and story of the 3.5 is no match of the 2nd.Also,i think the 3.5 rules are too complex, especially at character creation. But then, many seem to prefer that so... :)

This was dumb, unfunny, and 4.0 sucks. I was entertained for SOME reason, though. Maybe it was... the... voice-acting? Maybe? I dunno. 4.0 sucks and this was disappointing.

My inner nerd can't help but point out that, if a 3rd edition character (as your rogue/sorcerer must plainly be, since as of yet there are no sorcerers in 4e) were to somehow be placed in battle with a 4th edition one, the 4th edition character would surely win - they has higher hp, attacks, and defenses/saves - its like all of the numbers have been increased.

4e lost a lot in terms of depth and flexibility, but it also gained a lot in terms of balance and ease of implementation. I wouldn't say it sucks; it just isn't as 'deep' as 3e, which is sometimes a good thing. I prefer 3e, but I can see reasons why 4e would be far more appropriate for some groups.
Also, I really like the way characters get a ton more feats in 4e. Feats are FUN.

Just finished reading thru all the comments, Can't comment on original D&D, but I did get to play 2nd, 3rd (and 3.5), and now 4th edition.
My conclusions are that all versions are good for something : 2nd makes it hard to unbalance, unless the DM gives out too much good items. 3rd althought a bit strong on powergaming and harsh to mages (fireball still deals 10d6, where a fighter has nearly twice the HPs), but is much easier. I do feel 4th is more if I want my little cousins to play. ie:<12yo

um a player can still choose a gnome if they want to just look in the back of the monster manual it has all of the info for certian races not listed in the players handbook it also says "players can use the races"

Yes, but they also say that they aren't properly balanced and that they should talk to the DM first. I can see a DM turning down an Orc or Minotaur Fighter, two other races included in that section. None of them are player races.
